My Skin Journey With the Biodermal Aesthetic Clinic

A couple of months ago I attended the opening of the Biodermal Aesthetics clinic and I received some treatment thereafter to see first hand how the technology works. This is my skin journey...

The first step to healthy, glowing skin, is understanding how it works! Often the most overlooked, albeit the largest organ of the human body, our skin goes un-nurtured because we have no clue as to how it functions. My sessions with Nadhiya from the Biodermal Aesthetics Clinic have been enlightening to say the least.

I was never one to skimp on my facial products, after all, looking after our skin is a worthy investment. But lathering on creams can be a pointless process if it is not backed up with a proper routine and regime. I also had a few concerns and problem areas I wanted targeted during treatment - Pesky pigmentation and the onset of fine lines!

Nadhiya is very thorough with her assessment of the skin, explaining the process well as we go along. Starting off with checking the all important moisture levels, she mapped out a treatment plan tailor made for me. Despite diligently applying face creams, my first session showed very low moisture levels, the result of which was the appearance of fine lines!

I really get the feeling that with the Bio Therapeutic brand the aim is to achieve and then maintain adequate moisture levels in the skin in order for it to thrive! Stripping away the dead skin cells with exfoliation is such a vital step in skin care and I really feel like the technology assists in achieving the best possible results. It helps provide an adequate canvas for the next few steps in the treatments, which aims at maximising moisture levels in the skin. With Nadhiya explaining the process to me, I could really appreciate how technology is used to achieve maximum results!

Although not an instant cure for pigmentation, I do feel that the treatment lives up to it's promise of a more youthful appearance. With adequate hydration levels, all fine lines are gone! Proof that technology really can enhance one's treatment and make a tremendous difference!

Summer Highlights - Cruising

The kids are really growing up in an era of instant gratification! Online shopping, internet banking, email, instant messaging...Everything is easily and instantly accessible with a few clicks of the fingertips without ever having to weather the inconvenience of queue. And without the grounding of the slower paced existence like I stem from (snail mail and the likes), I feel like we are raising an impatient generation!

This was particularly evident on one particular day during the Summer holidays. We had planned to take the kids to Hout Bay for a boat trip, but as fate would have it, numerous people intended to soak up the Cape Town sun in a similar fashion and our trek ended up fruitless. While the adults seemed happy to find an alternate plan, the kids seemed restless and frustrated...tell tale signs of the infiltration of the new age system of instant gratification....in this case, the lack thereof!

With plan B not quite turning out the way we intended, we headed off to destination C. Stuck in traffic on a glorious Summer day was nobody's idea of fun and I was ready to steer my car in the direction of home instead, the moaning voices on the backseat and a low cell phone battery (I do not have a car charger) doing nothing to help curb the frustration.

In the last hope of salvaging the day, we made it to the Waterfront just in time for a late afternoon boat trip, a due reward after a trying afternoon. Perhaps the biggest reward was the lesson learnt. That everything doesn't come easy. Life isn't a one way cruise... That some things are worth the wait! I suppose Patience was definitely the underlying theme of this day and boy oh boy was it a worthy lesson for the kids (and me) to learn :-)

Recipe - Chocolate Brownie Cookies

Ever since I took my first fateful bite into this cookie at the Hey Gorgeous High Tea a few months back, I knew I had to covet this recipe - or at least something close to it!! Crispy cookie on the outside and fudgy, gooey, brownie goodness on the inside; it's a combination of the best of both worlds and has the ability to lure in even the die-hard anti sugar crowd ( ha ha )!

Thanks to Pinterest (and Moon's nifty investigative skills) my search is over. The mystery of the cookie recipe, solved! The secret, out of the box...literally! I'm not even joking. And the best part is that they are super easy to make. If you are aboard any wagon headed in the direction of healthy eating, I suggest you make a brief stop, have a cookie or two, climb back on and continue ahead....You can thank me later ;-)

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 Box Chocolate Cake mix (I used Woolworths )
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 packet instant coffee dissolved in 2 Tblsp water ( I used a few tsp regular instant coffee)
  • 1 Tblsp oil
  • 1 1/2 cups choc chips
  • 1 1/2 cups white choc chips

METHOD
  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius
  2. Beat butter till smooth. Add egg and beat until combined. Add coffee and oil and beat until combined.
  3. Add cake mixture in batches and beat slowly after each addition until combined.
  4. Stir in chocolate chips and white chocolate chips. Roll into balls and place onto a baking sheet  a few inches apart.
  5. Bake for 7-10 minutes, until tops are just set and cracks have begun to form and the cookies are flattened. Cookies will be slightly wobbly on exit, but will harden after a few minutes. DO NOT OVERBAKE!! Cookies will become rock hard.
  6. Invite a few friends and enjoy!

Summer Highlights - Facing Fears at Ratanga Junction

The face of fear!! Slingshot with my nephew...

Oh my! What a week it has been!! We will soon be entering our fourth week of school and already seem to be entangled in the challenges and pressure that the school year brings. I'm finding it rather calming and therapeutic to take a break from all the mayhem of the week to recap some of my favourite holiday moments that have passed by. It offers me at least some respite, knowing that we all had a wonderful break, and offers some hope that at the end of it all, we have new experiences to look forward to...

Ratanga Junction has become an annual family pit stop for us. I have watched the kids progress from the baby rides, to the moments of making the height requirements of the more adventurous ones...and done it all over again with little Zee! I've endured disappointment when my favourite rides closed down, and the exhilaration of tackling ones I didn't dare try before. I have trekked across the terrain countless times, pushing prams, holding hands, letting them go  and each time the kids manage to persuade me to try something new!

Perhaps the best part of it all is that, all these fresh and new adventures I get to experience with my kids. That for a change, it's not me encouraging them to push their boundaries, but them encouraging me to do things I never dreamt of doing before. That while I may be teaching them about life and balance and a calm existence, they are re-teaching me how to be alive and live in the moment and in the midst of it all, helping me face my own fears!

So thank you kids, for reigniting my sense of adventure and helping me stare my fear of heights in the face! I'm not quite sure I am over it, but I'm a helluva lot closer to conquering it for good!
